I am happy to present to you our University and welcome you to be involved in the progress of the University as its stakeholders.Over the past 39 years, Mangalore University has grown in stature and is today recognised as one of the premier Universities in the country accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade. With a mere 4 departments to begin with on the campus today our University has 28 Departments offering 39 PG programmes, 30 Ph D programmes and over 211 colleges are affiliated to the University.

Our University is known for conducting its academic programmes and examinations as per schedule. The credit based semester system at the undergraduate level and the choice based credit system for the two year (four semesters) Master’s degree programme are working well.

Adequate infrastructure is always a priority for the University. The basic facilities available on the campus include administrative building, Faculty buildings, Library, Student Hostels, Staff Quarters, Guest House, a well-equipped outpatient health centre, and sports facilities including a 400 metre track and Indoor Games Complex. The Mangala Auditorium with the stat-of-the-art facilities is available for all the major and mega events. The University has its own water supply arrangement on the campus. Among other facilities Banking, Cyber Cafe, INFLIBNET and postal and communication facilities are included.

The 1GBps internet connectivity of the University has been now extended to all the students and faculty 24X7 using Wi-Fi technology. All University offices are computerised and the University is adopting e-governance initiatives. All faculty members are given laptops to help them in teaching and research activities.

Our teaching faculty have rendered themselves creditably in teaching and research activities. Mangalore University has been ranked number two in Chemical Science research at national level and number one in International collaboration by SCOPUS, which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources. Mangalore University stands 24th among the top 50 institutes of higher learning in the country.

We have internationally recognised national research centres like the Microtron, Centre for Application of Radioisotope and Radiation Technology (CARRT), Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER) , Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell (OASTC). Sophisticated research equipments are also housed in the USIC and PURSE labs on the campus. Many departments and faculty also have good equipments in their research labs too.

A Research and Consultancy Promotion Cell (RCPC) has been constituted to promote and strengthen research programmes of our University. It is also felt that the consultancy programmes needs to be strengthened to encourage the faculty to work in collaboration with industries and institutions in the area of their expertise. University-Industry interactions are strengthened and the University proposes to start skill development programmes in collaboration with industries.

The University Library has an extensive collection of over 2 Lakh books and 293 journals required for teaching and research. It is also connected with UGC-Infonet for e-resources. Anti-plagiarism software has been installed in the library to curtail plagiarism under the Shoda-Ganga project. The University has developed a new dynamic and interactive web-portal with information kiosks and displays. A vermin-compost unit is being set up for waste management on the campus. Steps are taken for utilizing the waste water through water treatment plant. Rainwater harvesting has also been adopted. Beautification of the campus is going on through landscaping and renovation of buildings.

CCTV cameras are being installed on the campus for providing safe and secure environs to the students and other stakeholders. New media centre is opened in the Kaveri guest house. University is also encouraging extension activities through village adoption programmes to strengthen the linkage with society.

It is proposed to start a world class Centre for Advanced Scientific Research at Belapu, Udupi District and also to introduce more postgraduate programmes at the new P.G.Centre, Chikka Aluvara, Kodagu District. The University proposes to establish Innovation Facilitation Centre with the help of NRDC. The University maintains a close liaison with the public of the coastal region and Kodagu through meaningful programmes including University-Industry interaction, extension activities through NSS and various Endowment Chairs and Study Centres. The “Swachh Bharath” programme is being carried out very effectively involving the NGOs and the local people.

Our constituent colleges University College at Mangalore and FMKMC College at Madikeri are doing well and are accredited with A grade by NAAC. They offer both UG as well as few PG programmes as per the regional needs of the society. The International Study centre is doing well and the University has been able to attract many International students for PG and Research programmes.

The University provides scholarships for meritorious students. There are other endowment scholarships for meritorious but poor students. In addition to this, the University has introduced sports scholarships for talented sports persons. Incentives are also provided to sports persons who create new records and who win individual medals at the Inter University competitions. Mangalore University received Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Best University Award 2013-14 from the President of India. Also the University has produced some national level athletes, who have won laurels at the national level.

The processes of Admissions and Examinations are fully computerised. The University provides a safe and peaceful environment that is conducive to learning with the active support of students, faculty, administrative staff and the University authorities.

I am confident that Mangalore University will reach greater heights of excellence nationally and internationally in the days to come and attract more students from other parts of the world.
